Pujas are done by hindus as an indication of honor and worship or to spiritually celebrate an event. This is done using an idol and placing that idol in the Puja Mantap/Mandir.
Perhaps you are lucky enough to have a whole room of your house to devote to a puja space. Or perhaps what you have is a closet, an alcove, a corner. You can make that work!
Here are the steps I have documented while building it. The exercise was fun from beginning and satisfying in the end.
Step 1:
Draw very clearly how you want the whole thing to look like. This will save you a lot of time and trip to home depot. The blueprint I created looked like this.
Now the one I built was 2.5 ft wide, 1.5 ft long and 3ft tall. You can choose smaller dimensions if you want.
Step 2:
Get your tools together. You can do it with normal screw driver which you may already have at home, but I will suggest you get a power screw driver. This will make things lot easier. May be you can borrow from your friends or for as low as 30$. In addition to this you will need a hand saw. You can Buy for as low as 5$. Don't attempt to use your kitchen knife for this. You will end up with rough edges.
Step 3:
To get the basic structure up, you will need 3 things. Two planks on top and 4 stands between them. To buy the planks, goto home depot and catch hold of the associate in the lumber area. Once you pick up the plywood, he will cut it for you. Pick up something which is at least 3/4 or 1 inch thickness. Don't try this with a saw, get it cut at home depot.
Step 4:
Put the planks on both side and put the stands between them. Tighten two screws per stand on each side. Screw in the 4 legs on the bottom plank. You can apply a little carpenter glue on that area before screwing in the legs. Now you should have a stand which looks like this. You can choose to add wooden Bracket in side but it is not mandatory. I added two only in front.
Step 5 :
After you finish Step 4, you will realize that the stand may be still wobbly. This can be fixed by adding a thin plywood in the back. This should be thin, around 1/4 inch. You should get a plywood which is of same height and width of the mandap. You have to put the mandap down and just use nails, to fix it to the back side of the mandap. You can choose to add additional decorative foot on the top, but it is optional.
Step 6 :
Now is the time for adding a gopuram on the top. This can be achieved by putting two block moulding next to each other. No need to use nails or screws here, you can just use carpenter glue. Now it should look like this.
Step 7 :
Your mandap should be looking great now. We will now add a line of moulding on the top. Get one of the decorating Moulding and add it to the top. You can use your creativity here. You can even buy a moulding and paint them. These moulding are sold as one long piece, so just one of them will be good to go. Use your hand saw to cut them to appropriate length.
Step 8:
Now we need to add the rail moulding to the bottom. The home depot guy may refuse to cut it as it is light. So you can cut it using your hand saw. Make sure you hold it steady to get smooth edges. You can use carpenters to stick them on the bottom left, right and front. Now all done with carpentry.
Step 9:
Take the cotton string and paste it on the edges of your pooja mandir. Color it with black and copper to increase its aesthetic appeal.
Conclusion:
Place your pooja mandir on top of a table, platform or a shelf. You can make two loops and hang it on the wall too. Before placing the mandir, keep pooja room vastu in mind. Finally, keep your deities in the pooja mandir and do your pooja with utter devotion.
